Bohemia Rose
Christoph Vetter (1575-1650); Bohemia

This map illustrates Leopold’s ambition to consolidate Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia into one dynastic territory. Vienna was to become the focal point for his new empire, which would eventually become the Austro-Hungary Double Monarchy. This map shows Prague at the center, and leaves of the flower representing Bavarian palatinate, Austria, Moravia, Silesia, and the stem leading down to the fertile soil of Vienna – Habsburg’s political center. The text reads: “There grew a graceful Rose in the Bohemian woods, and an amoured lion standing guard next to her. […] The Rose of Bohemia, bloody for all the centuries, where more than 80 battles were waged. She has been now drawn in this form for the first time.”
